Nutritional Supplements: Your Guide to Better Health!

Nutritional supplements, also referred to as food supplements or dietary supplements, have become part and parcel of our lives today.

Nowadays, it can be extremely difficult to eat a well balanced nutritious diet consistently. Due to our busy lifestyles, it is so much easier to buy food from a large chain grocery store, gobble up dinner and keep on going. We are continually tempted to skip meals or go for fast foods.

The processing and preservation of these foods deprive them off essential nutrients that our bodies need. These nutrient-poor foods are unavoidable in these modern days.

As much as processed foods fit our modern busy lifestyles, most of these food works against us instead of for us and over a period of time, this results into a weakness, an illness or health problem.

The point I am trying to make is, the foods that we take today do not provide all the nutrients we need to maintain our body’s healthy state. Therefore, this is the whole reason why we all need to supplement our diets.

Nutritional supplements are intended to complement what we eat by providing nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, fiber, amino acids, or fatty acids that are inadequate or missing in a person's diet.

why supplements? do I really need them?

People take supplements for reasons relating to their health. Nowadays, our food are depleted off essential nutrients as a result of modern processing and preservation. Therefore supplementation is necessary for bridging the gaps in our diets.

Some other reasons for taking supplements include:

  • To boost vitality
  • To limit or delay the signs of ageing
  • To reduce susceptibility to health problems (like cold)
  • To prevent heart attack
  • To prevent cancer
  • To reduce stress

Therefore, the main reason we take nutritional supplements is for our general health and well being.

In other words, do not wait until when a problem strikes; take responsibility and guard your heath!

Who need supplements most?

  • Women in their child bearing years may need extra synthetic folic acid if their dietary patterns do not supply enough
  • Women with excessive bleeding during menstruation may need extra iron
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding may need extra iron, folate, and calcium
  • People with very low energy intakes may need a range of vitamins and minerals. This is true for some women and older people.
  • Strict vegetarians may need extra calcium, iron, zinc, and vitamin B-12
  • People with limited milk intake and sunlight exposure may need extra vitamin D
  • People with lactose intolerance or allergies to daily products may need extra calcium
  • Adults over the age of 50 need a synthetic source of vitamin B-12
  • People on very low-fat diets or diets low in plant oils and nuts may need some extra vitamin E

Choosing Supplements that You can Trust

The nutritional health and wellness industry is growing rapidly and many companies are putting supplements on the shelves and online. So…The question is “whom do I trust?”

Well, it comes down to making informed choices;

The first step in choosing nutritional supplements is to identify your nutritional needs. Is there something that your daily diet lacks that you wish to supplement? Recognize your nutrition gaps and the supplements that can fill these gaps.

The next step is to choose a supplements’ company that you can trust. This may be a difficult task because nutritional supplements are largely unregulated, making it difficult for consumers to feel safe buying a brand that they do not know or trust.

To go about this task, look at the labels of the supplement to know who the company is, their contact information and the nutrients form and ingredient contained in the supplement. Look up for the company website or even call their customer services personnel and seek answers to these questions:

Are there tests that prove the effectiveness and safety of the supplement? Does the company practice quality control and safe manufacturing processes? Are the supplement products bio-available? Meaning do they get absorbed and used by the body and not just passed through the system as waste.

If you are unable to find enough information to trust the company, then it is in your best interest to avoid those supplements.

The last step in choosing the right nutritional supplements is to research and educate yourself on how supplements affect your body. Learn which supplements work together and why you need a good balance. This is because taking too much or taking an improper balance of some supplements can actually do more harm than good to you.

Your body health is your greatest wealth; do your best possible to maintain this wealth! Always remember!…the choices you make affect your future health and wellness.
